Every Disturbing New Horror Title Hitting Amazon Prime This March
Another month, another new slate of horror titles available to stream. While Shudder remains the premier streaming destination for all things spooky, the other streamers have managed to pull their respective weight. March’s offerings for Amazon Prime don’t have quite the same heft as their February slate, but there’s enough stuff coming—some new, some old—that’s worth checking out.
Swarm
The first, and perhaps most-anticipated title, hitting the streamer this month is the Donald Glover series Swarm. While plot details remain slim, we at least know it’s about “an obsessed, Houston-based fan goes to increasingly violent lengths for her favorite R&B singer.” Dominique Fishback stars as Dre, with Chloe Bailey, and Damson Idris in supporting roles. With the release of the first trailer, the show seems to be targeting humor as much as horror. With an indelible focus on stan culture, Swarm might very well be the next big horror thing when it hits the streamer March 17.
Carrie
While Brian de Palma’s Carrie is also hitting Amazon Prime this month, I wanted to highlight Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 remake. Sure, it’s not anywhere near as good as De Palma’s original adaption of Stephen King’s classic novel, but it’s a more assured remake than most. At its best, it adds the needed modernity to the tale of revenge, incorporating the likes of smartphones and cyberbullying into its telekinetic proceedings. At its worst, of course, it merely riffs to lesser effect on what De Palma already did. Still, Chloë Grace Moretz gives it her all, and with Peirce behind the camera, there’s a distinct sense of empathy that De Palma’s didn’t already have. I don’t need to tell anyone to watch the original, but for those who skipped out on the remake, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Cloverfield
Remember when The Cloverfield Paradox dropped on Netflix after the Super Bowl in 2018 and got everyone excited? Remember when the movie kinda… wasn’t great. Well, that isn’t the case with Matt Reeves’ original. The contemporary forebear of ingenuous marketing, Cloverfield may not have been exactly what audiences were expecting, though it remains a hallmark of both giant monster terror and found-footage scares. Monsters swarm New York City and several young adults must run for their lives. That’s all there is to it. In the years since release, Cloverfield has only gotten better. Now if we could just get that sequel (though, in fairness, 10 Cloverfield Lane is just as, if not more, effective than the first).
Nope
It’s Nope, ya’ll. I don’t have much to say that hasn’t been said already, but there’s a reason Jordan Peele’s third feature placed on several year-end lists (mine included). It’s the kind of movie that demands repeat viewings, if only to appreciate the assured, operatic level Peele is operating on. It’s big, it’s daring, and yes, it’s genuinely terrifying at times. With its streaming premiere on March 21, now is as good a time as any to either revisit or catch Peele’s masterpiece for the first time.
Eye for an Eye
While Eye for an Eye hasn’t aged terribly well in some ways—the entire slate of judicial revenge thrillers is a bit too pro-incarceration— it still merits a watch on account of Sally Field’s ferocious performance. She stars as Karen, a woman who overhears the assault and death of her oldest daughter. When Kiefer Sutherland’s Doobs, the assailant, is released on a technicality, Field embarks upon a dangerous road of revenge (hence the title). Eye for an Eye, like several other trashy domestic thrillers (see: The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The Good Son, etc.), gets by on the gritty, grungy thrills of the late nineties. It’s intense, frenetic, and a rousing (if problematic) revenge thriller.
