Obsession: Single White Female and The Roommate [The Rabid Dog’s House]
The Rabid Dog’s House is a recurring feature at Wicked Horror where contributor Justin Steele uncovers hidden gems, lost classics, and overlooked indie offerings with a little bite. Flying solo or with his co-host Zena Dixon, he will discuss an array of topics covering film, literature, and television. Check out the latest installment below. In this episode we’re looking back at 1992’s Single White Female and 2011’s The Roommate!
Single White Female (1992) and The Roommate (2011) are two psychological thrillers centered on obsession. Directed by Barbet Schroder, Single White Female stars Bridget Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Steven Weber. After finding her boyfriend, Sam (Weber) has cheated, software designer Allie decides to get a roommate named Hedy (Leigh). Life seems swell until Sam comes back into the picture, and Hedy starts to duplicate Allie’s look and style. Directed by Christian E. Christiansen, The Roommate stars Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, and Billy Zane. New college student Sara (Kelly) hits it off quickly with her roommate Rebecca (Meester), but unfortunately, Rebecca wants Sara all to herself.
Both features explore how easily we can let strangers into our lives, and how quickly friendship can turn into obsession. Sharing similar themes, each movie offers something fun for fans of thrillers, and even with almost 20 years between them, these flicks also show that certain ideas are always relevant to contemporary audiences. Strong performances and chilling concepts make these movies worth the watch.
