We have horror hero James Wan to thank for some of the most successful scary movies of all time. With each massive hit produced or directed by the Insidious creator, our favorite genre is further strengthened in a cinema landscape that’s hyper sensitive to box office numbers.

While horror has and always will be a smart bet for studios, that doesn’t stop major outlets and personalities from stirring up panic every time a major title disappoints at the box office. But as long as we have masterminds like Wan producing new works, there’s no reason for alarmists to sounds off. And, of all of Wan’s successes, his Conjuring Universe has spurred the most record-setting of his impressive career. The series even produced the 10th highest-grossing horror film of all time with its 2018 spin-off The Nun.

Netflix has housed another giant earner from Wan’s horror universe for some time, but sadly it will be leaving the platform by the end of August. Having raked in over 200 million dollars against its 40 million dollar budget, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It has already cracked the top forty most successful scary movies ever.

This supernatural shocker took something of a tonal shift for the franchise, and it’s definitely worth a watch for horror fans interested in true crime and religious horrors. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you might want to cue it up soon. It’ll be disappearing from Netflix on August 31st.

A 2021 genre blockbuster, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was directed by Wan-favorite Michael Chaves and was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. You’ll know the writer from his twisted scripts for the iconic Orphan series. Once again, the third film in the official Conjuring series stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Ruairi O’Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook and Julian Hillard also appear this time as the series takes on the disturbing trail of Arne Cheyenne Johnson.

According to Warner Brothers, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It “reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren … One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.”

The movie helped greenlight a fourth film in The Conjuring series, Last Rites, which is currently slated for release on September 25th, 2025. It’s also said that the new film will be the finale of the main Conjuring films. And we can’t forget about the television series currently in production.
