A week after Vice President JD Vance‘s headline-making appearance on ABC’s The View, the conversation surrounding his visit continues. During the June 23 episode of the podcast Behind the Table, cohost Joy Behar addressed Vance’s recent comment that the two are “best friends” and explained why she chose to engage with him respectfully despite their deep political disagreements.

In the clip, Vance was talking to the press about negotiations with Iran, and the questions he received regarding his personal experience with “hostile high stakes negotiations,” to which he responded, “Just two days ago, I spent over an hour on The View,” so he has great experience. “Look, Joy Behar is way tougher than the Iranians, and she and I are best friends now…”

“Our JD Vance interview is the gift that keeps on giving,” said host Brian Teta of Vance’s first-ever appearance on The View last Thursday, June 16. “He was at a press conference about Iran and said the two of you were best friends.”

During the hour-long episode, Vance joined all six cohosts live in the studio to promote his memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith. In addition to discussing his faith and book, Vance fielded questions and defended the administration’s record on topics like the economy, immigration, and foreign policy.

“No, he did not!” denied Behar. “What he said was…he was at the White House, and he said that Joy Behar is harder to negotiate with than Iranians…”

“…And now [you’re] best friends!” exclaimed Teta.

“Well, I don’t know about that,” responded Behar.

“He said, these are hostile negotiations here at The View, and you’re tougher to negotiate with than Iran.”

“It’s funny that he wants to be friends with me. Why?” asked Behar. “I don’t approve of his positions. I definitely don’t approve of Donald Trump and his positions…”

Teta commented that Behar was getting a hard time because she wasn’t openly hostile towards Vance when he appeared on the show despite their opposing political views. “I’m not openly hostile to anyone who is a guest on the show,” explained Behar. “Although you could attack me for saying I walked off the air on Bill O’Reilly. But that was because he could not be reasoned with, and he kept saying Muslims were terrorists, which annoyed me. You can’t say all of anybody is anything. And he was so annoying about it that I said, ‘I can’t sit here anymore.’”

“People talk about how the parties and the people in this country are so divisive. I think that I could help the situation, because I have a way about me,” said Behar. “I had a manager that described me this way: Joy will tell you go f**k yourself, and you say thank you. It’s my sense of humor. And I have to give it to [Vance], the guy used the joke. He used it as a joke. He has a sense of humor, which is a sign of something.”

“It’s disarming, if nothing else,” agreed Teta. “If only he can get Iran to disarm.”
