Barbie Movie Outfits: Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling’s Looks

Greta Gerwig’s live-action “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie as the main character and Ryan Gosling as boyfriend Ken. Both actors underwent a transformation to play their respective roles; Gosling even bleached his hair platinum blond to embody the look. Of course, the film called for a fashion makeover as well – and the “Barbie” movie outfits are a visual feast for the eyes.

Jacqueline Durran — famous for her work on “Spencer,” “Little Women,” and the live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” — is behind the incredible costume design. In the movie, Barbie’s retro style is re-created almost to a T, as shown by Robbie’s 1959-inspired black-and-white strapless swimsuit. In another scene, sitting in her iconic convertible, Robbie wears a blue-and-white-striped halter top with a sweetheart neckline; a thick, polka-dot headband; and a chunky beaded bracelet.

Meanwhile, Ken gets his own Calvin Klein-inspired branded underwear, with the waistband peeking out prominently from his denim-on-denim coordinates. Later, he taps into a rockstar persona wearing a floor-length white “fur” coat with no shirt underneath. The couple also sport Western rodeo outfits, complete with fringe and intricate embroidery, as well as neon ’90s rollerblading sets.

Notably, Durran collaborated with Chanel on several looks that appear in the movie on Margot Robbie, who is a celebrated ambassador of the fashion house. Alongside accessories like Barbie’s heart-shaped Chanel bag, Durran pulled tweed skirt suits, a ski suit for Ken, and more. “One of the things about Barbie is that she’s always accessorized, and Chanel makes fantastic accessories,” Durran told POPSUGAR.

Other Barbies get their time to shine as well. Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon) shares her wisdom wearing a fuchsia puff-sleeve dress with a colorful, splashy print on the front. President Barbie (Issa Rae) delivers a speech in a rosy-hued jumpsuit, recasting pink as a color that connotes power, strength, and success.

Gerwig’s “Barbie” is, in part, responsible for the excitement surrounding the Barbiecore aesthetic in fashion. With stars like Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly serving up pink looks on the red carpet and Cardi B and Lizzo wearing head-to-toe pink out and about, Barbie fashion inspiration is everywhere this season.
