From Margot Robbie’s Barbie ensembles to Hunter Schafer’s ‘Hunger Games’ looks, these stars’ styles defined the year.

Who was the best-dressed person of 2023? In a year filled with viral sartorial moments, the options feel nearly endless. Were you into the “Goth Girl” aesthetic? What did you make of Barbiecore? Did you revel in the constant stream of quiet luxury looks? It’s tough to pick a favourite fashion figure — but that’s why we’re here.

As December comes to a close, FASHION editors are looking back at the snazziest stars of the past 12 months. Below, we’ve listed our picks for the chicest celebs of the year.

Michelle Yeoh

I have so much admiration for Michelle Yeoh. At 61, she is still open to new ideas and taking fashion risks. She understands that the red carpet demands a fashion “moment” but she remains true to her own chic style. The Dior capelet pantsuit that she wore to the 2023 Bafta Awards in London is a perfect example of that. Bernadette Morra, Editor-in-Chef

Jeremy Pope

Jeremy Pope is always pushing boundaries and redefining the red carpet. I first noticed Jeremy back in 2021 when he wore an off-the-shoulder white pant look with Margiela Tabi boots.

He’s since evolved into a fearless fashion warrior! For his tribute to Karl Lagerfeld at the Met Gala, Pope wore a 30-foot-long Balmain cape embroidered with the late designer’s face. George Antonopoulos, Creative and Fashion Director

Margot Robbie

Barbie was one of my earliest fashion influences so to see her come to life in the form of the most gorgeous woman alive (a.k.a. Margot Robbie) fulfilled so many of my childhood dreams.

While it’s hard to choose between all of the amazing looks she wore during the Barbie movie press tour, this iconic black sparkle dress had me audibly gasping when I saw it on Instagram. Ken, who? Annika Lautens, Fashion News Director

Gabriette

Mentally I’m still here, so you can imagine how thrilling it’s been for me to witness Gabbriette Bechtel’s star rise over the last few years. The model, singer and food content creator has been one of my favourite TikTok accounts to follow since I downloaded the video app, thanks to her ideal (to me) combination of recipes, fashion and beauty content.

She also happens to be one of the faces of 2023’s “Goth Girl” aesthetic and her beauty influence cannot be understated. I will worship at the altar of pencil-thin brows, a brown ’90s lip and smudged black eyeliner forever.

My favourite look of hers this past year was the black mesh corset dress she wore to the Versace Fall 2023 show, which she paired with old Hollywood waves. Heavenly! (Or do goth girls prefer ‘hellish’?) Souzan Michael Galway, Acting Beauty Director

Hunter Schafer

It all started with a feather. The single-plume bandeau Hunter Schafer wore to the 2023 Oscars After Party quickly went viral, and has since lived in my head rent-free. I’ve long been a fan of the way Schafer mixes risqué and avant-garde aesthetics for a perfectly weird red-carpet result.

She ended the year with a daring rotation of method-dressing looks while promoting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Her standout ensembles — ranging from a surrealist floral Marni number to paper-maché reminiscent Schiaparelli couture — sit at the top of my list of best-dressed 2023 moments. And in a year with Halle Bailey’s The Little Mermaid, that’s saying something. Natalie Michie, Social Media/Market Editor

Jasmine Tookes

I am nothing if not a lover of neutral-toned, minimalist pieces, and Jasmine Tookes was the best dressed in this category in 2023. Always polished with a slight edge — whether that be an all-black ensemble or a plunging neckline — this former Victoria’s Secret Angel is a true embodiment of both the model-off-duty and quiet luxury aesthetics.

Instead of playing with colour, Tookes’s fashion was all about shape. An ab revealing cutout? Ultra-wide trousers? A waist-cinching blazer? She was practically a shape-shifter. Though I’m constantly in awe of her ability to reinvent the little black dress for red-carpet appearances, the look I can’t seem to get over from this year is a simple, floor-grazing silk number that draped over her modelesque frame exquisitely during the summer.
