Hamptons Outfit Formulas to Copy This Summer

Spending the first half-decade of my life in Connecticut, I had my fair share of gorgeous moments on East Coast beaches all across New England and in New York that still come back to me in nostalgic waves. It fully cemented just how much I love and appreciate coastal style. However, it wasn’t until I left my home state of Oregon and moved to New York officially that I experienced The Hamptons, and subsequently, Hamptons-style outfits.

There’s something about Hamptons style that makes it stand out from other coasts in the U.S. (Oregon and California styles differ drastically), and other seaside places around the world. It’s effortless enough for coastal wear, but it’s elevated and sophisticated at the same time. Colourful and vibrant prints exist, but they’re often swapped for hues and fabrics with slightly more timeless appeal. Hamptons outfits also have breeziness about them that you can only really find by the sea.

I’d also argue that The Hamptons is one of the birthplaces of summer quiet luxury. The outfits are notoriously elevated, regardless of whether you’re spending a day getting sandy at the beach or exploring the adorable boutiques dotted all around. All of this to say, they understand chic coastal style to a T. Even if you’re on a European vacation this summer or visiting the breathtaking beaches around the UK, you can still pull inspiration from this highly stylish part of New York. Here are several looks that emulate Hamptons style to inspire your own vacation ensembles this season.

7 Hamptons-Style Outfits to Copy This Summer:

1. Striped Matching Set

Style Notes: White and blue stripes are a hallmark of Hamptons style. I love how Lauren opted for a breezy, lightweight shorts-and-tank-top combo. It fits in seamlessly with the coastal aesthetic, and works as a laid-back matching set for spending time by the sea or as a cute look for walking around town with the right pair of sandals.

2. Gingham or Print Dress + Sandals

Style Notes: A flowy print dress is part of any Hamptons capsule. The key is packing pieces that feel comfortable enough for wearing around all day, but can be dressed up for dinner out. That’s what summer dresses excel at bringing to the table. Karina’s choice of gingham is so classic and will see you through so many summers. You could also opt for florals or more abstract prints.

3. Linen Top + Matching Trousers

Style Notes: A linen set is the easiest way to look put-together without much effort, which is exactly what I’m all about what on holiday.

4. White Blouse + Light Blue Jeans + Basket Bag

Style Notes: East Coast beaches aren’t always boiling hot, so it’s smart to pack layers. Some cooler, misty mornings and evenings call for long-sleeve shirts and jeans. Jen’s outfit is the epitome of Hamptons chic. A crisp white blouse and wide-leg blue jeans are one uniform you can always rely on during your coastal getaway. Add a basket bag and you’re set.

5. Beach-Inspired Jewellery + Tee + Bloomers

Style Notes: Candice’s gorgeous jewellery is the perfect reminder of how much accessories can bring to your outfit. In The Hamptons, it’s never a bad idea to pull inspiration from the sea. Nautical charms, marine-inspired pendants, and shell-adorned earrings or bracelets all help you fully embrace your time by the ocean. Pair with bloomers and a simple tee for the perfect everyday look.

6. Linen Coverup + Raffia Tote

Style Notes: The beauty of Hamptons style uniforms is that they’re relatively simple to put together, but look undeniably chic even so. Cotton and linen shirts work as the perfect cover-ups for a day of swimming, as proven by Jessica’s look. You can complete the ensemble with a large woven tote and leather slides that are easy to slip in and out of. Whilst there is room for vibrant colours and patterned beach attire, there’s something special about classic beach attire. The quiet palette is something you’ll ever tire of.

7. White Jeans + Beige Top + Black Accessories

Style Notes: In The Hamptons, you’ll likely notice that the colour palettes of outfits often reflect the surroundings. Sandy biege, bright whites and creams, light brown, light blue and navy are all popular choices. The right mixture of these tones makes for a sophisticated look, as Renata has created here. White jeans (another Hamptons staple) and a beige tank top look perfect when finished with a sleek black belt and pair of flats.
