No Pants Trend | POPSUGAR Fashion
Long gone are the days of fashion having strict rules. Many trends have come and gone and resurfaced again, from outlandish styles like the skirts-over-pants look of the 2000s to more practical aesthetics like the Sofia Richie-inspired quiet luxury. Of all the popular styles of the moment, we can’t seem to escape the no-pants trend. Where in the past, it was rare to step out without pants, celebrities have shamelessly and successfully produced several style moments that exclude the wardrobe essential. From Rihanna’s red puffer jacket and heels for a date with A$AP Rocky in mid-winter 2022 to Dove Cameron’s pantless moment with six-inch heels, it’s okay not to wear pants.
While this trend is currently enjoying a moment in the spotlight, going pantless first became famous as early as 2012. Miley Cyrus was among the first to try the bold styling method at the Billboard Music Awards of that same year, having worn just a white Jean Paul Gaultier blazer and black-and-white striped heels. More stars eventually caught on, wearing oversize tops and jackets to give off the no-pants illusion, including Jennifer Lopez’s white button-down and denim boots combination while out in New York City and Nicki Minaj’s yellow blazer and black bra-and-panties she wore to New York Fashion Week in 2018.
Other celebrities have taken bolder approaches to the trend. During a performance at the 2023 Met Gala, Lizzo wore just a silver one-shoulder bodysuit from her shapewear brand Yitty and over-the-knee metallic boots to match. And, of course, the Kardashian-Jenner sisters have naturally hopped on the bandwagon throughout the years, most notably Kylie Jenner’s blazer and fishnet tights for her Vanity Fair Italy cover in February and the Loewe white tank and underwear she wore over sheer black tights at Paris Fashion Week in 2022. While eating pizza in NYC, Bella Hadid also proudly rocked white underwear as a primary bottom with a black leather jacket and UGG boots.
