Rhode Peptide Lip Shape: Tried & Tested by Editors
If you keep a close eye on Hailey Bieber’s socials like I do, you’ll know that she has been teasing a new Rhode product for a while. And I’m so excited to share it’s finally here. Introducing the Rhode Peptide Lip Shape (£24), which is about to become your new beauty obsession, alongside the Peptide Lip Treatments and Pocket Blush.
When the opportunity arose for me to sit down with Hailey Bieber herself and have her personally talk me through the new lip shapers, I jumped at the chance to hear about them ahead of their launch. After our Zoom chat, I’m clued up on exactly how to achieve her signature contoured lip look with the new lip liners. Ahead, she shares her favourite shades, her must-try lip combos and all her lip lining tips and tricks to try next.
What Are the Rhode Lip Shapers?
That’s right, these are lip shapers, rather than liners. “The whole concept of this product is the idea of a contour for your face and bringing that specifically to the lips. This is a hybrid between a lip liner and a contour,” says Bieber.
Designed with a domed tip and smudging tool, these are made to be virtually foolproof, whether you’re over-lining or adding subtle definition—these are so versatile. Bieber tells me that these are so easy to use, you can apply them in the back of a taxi without messing up.
How to Use the Peptide Lip Shape
“This product is not about precision,” says Bieber. “This is about being able to go outside of the lines to exaggerate the lips, and being able to go inside the lines more if you want to. It’s made to give the lips that really contoured look and give the appearance of them being fuller,” she says. That being said, you can easily apply these all over the lips and pair with your favourite lipstick or gloss too (Bieber shares her favourite lip combos up ahead).
You might have noticed from pictures that on the other end of the pencil is a flexible, angled smudging tool, which is designed to make it easy to blend, blur and define the product. “I feel like every girl understands this—when you’re putting lip liner on, you use your finger to kind of smudge and sometimes, when you’re on the go, that can be a little annoying,” says Bieber. “So the smudger is really to be able to replace your finger if you want to, and also be able to clean up wherever you feel like you went a little bit too far outside the lines,” she says.
What Peptide Lip Shape and Lip Combos Does Hailey Bieber Wear?
On our Zoom call, I had to ask Bieber what her favourite lip combos are with the new Peptide Lip Shape, and she delivered all the details.
“I really like the shade Twist with our Piggy Pocket Blush. That’s a big combo that I’ve been using on a day-to-day basis,” says Bieber. “I also like using either Twist or Lunge, one of the more neutral contour shades, with just our clear Peptide Lip Treatment. I also really like one of the more rosier contour shades—Press is a good one that I really like. I feel like that one compliments my lip tone really well, again, with just one of our Peptide Lip Tints or Peptide Lip Treatments,” she says.
“Sometimes, I’ll take one of the deeper shades, and put our Piggy blush in the centre and have it little bit more darker on the outside and lighter on the inside. There’s so many combinations with these,” she says.
The Shades
There are 11 shades in total, from muted pinks and taupes to deep, cool browns, each specifically designed to bestow a contoured look to your lips. “We went about it thinking about the concept of contour specifically for the lips, and wanting to have shades that really complement all tones,” says Bieber. Whether you want to give natural contour or create a statement pout, these allow you to try every type of lip look you could want.
The Formula
Having tried the Peptide Lip Shapes ahead of the launch, I can confirm they are buttery-soft and actually really moisturising too—something you don’t get with other lip liners. They’re infused with Rhode’s hero ingredient, peptides, as well as fenugreek that helps to hydrate and soften the lips. They’re creamy and really easy to blend, too.
“It has that creaminess and softness on the lips,” says Bieber. “I wanted it to feel really good on the lips and for it to be smudgable without it wiping off,” she says. “That was a big thing for me, for it to have staying power and still stay in place when you got it to where you wanted it to be.”
Hailey Bieber’s Rhode Lip Shape Tips
If like me, you’re a bit scared of lip liners or over-lining, don’t stress—Bieber talked me through all her best tips. “I think like with anything like in the world of makeup, don’t be afraid to just play and make mistakes and figure out what works for you,” she says. “I think what I really like about our lip contour is that it’s really meant to be that product where you can be messier with it, and it doesn’t really need that precision.”
Bieber also advises getting to know your lip shape and going by that. “For me, my cupid’s bow is a bit bigger than the rest of my top lip. So I’d go by shadowing and contouring in the cupid’s bow and then kind of tapering it in as I go down,” she says. “I’m definitely one of those people that over-lines and goes really outside of the lines, because I like the effect that that kind of mouth contouring gives you. I love the appearance of my lips looking fuller than they are. So I’m definitely like an over-liner, for sure.”

Every Shade of the Rhode Lip Shape, Tried and Tested
Lift
Shade: Lift (soft neutral brown)
Grace’s Review: “As someone who favours a more subtle makeup look, I personally really liked this lip liner. I went for the shade Lift which is a natural pink hue, and it’s definitely a colour I would reach for on a daily basis. The creamy formula glided onto the lips and made them look fuller and plumper. I paired it with a light pink lip gloss and loved the finish result. The only thing I would say is that because of the creamy formula, the lasting power isn’t great, but I don’t mind having to top up my lip liner throughout the day. If you love a natural lip look, then this liner would be a good choice. However, if you prefer a more statement finish, I’m not sure that this would be the right liner for you.”

Press
Shade: Press (warm, pinky mauve)
Sophie’s Review: “I am really loving pink tints at the moment when it comes to my makeup, therefore I was so excited to try the Rhode Lip Shape in Press as it is such a lovely dusty pink that is quite subtle. The liner glides on easily over my lips and I found the blend tool interesting as I haven’t seen anything like that before.
It blended well, to give a subtle lift on my lips without being too overwhelming. I paired it with the Dior Lip Glow Oil in Cherry (£33) which complimented it nicely. I don’t think that it lasts for too long, I needed to reapply within the hour.”

Bend
Shade: Bend (soft peachy beige)
Shannon’s Review: “Genuinely, this is my dream lip liner for two major reasons. Firstly, I’m lazy with my makeup, and I tend to apply my entire face in less than a couple of minutes. Secondly, I have chronically dry lips. The formula is so creamy that it is almost lipstick-like, so it delivers ample moisture and doesn’t cling to any dry patches. This, combined with the fact the nib is pretty big in size, means it glides on with unparalleled ease. I used the tip to contour the outline of my lips and then used the side to apply it all over. Typically, I hate lip liner for its dry finish and faffy application, but this was a total breeze, and I applied my whole lip look in approximately 30 seconds.
I went for shade Bend, which I would describe as a warm-toned neutral, and went in with a slick of my go-to Rhode Peptide Lip Tint in Salty Tan over the top. I think this is probably going to become my everyday lip look from here on out. Is this a product for those who want a precise, super-defined lip look? No. Does it last particularly long? Not really. But for lazy girls like me, it’s a dream, and I’d take reapplication over flaky results any day.”

Lunge
Shade: Lunge (rosy beige)
Megan’s Review: “First impressions, I wasn’t super impressed with the packaging but I do like a liner that doesn’t require sharpening. I loved the colour (I tried shade Lunge), and my lips definitely looked plump and defined. The only major downside for me is that the formula didn’t have much staying power. Also, for me, the smudger proved a little redundant, as I blended mine anyway when applying my gloss afterwards.”

Twist
Shade: Twist (warm taupe)
Eleanor’s Review: “I tried Twist, which Hailey Bieber personally told me was one of her current favourites when I spoke with her on Zoom ahead of the launch. And I think it’s the perfect lip contour shade for me; it’s not too warm nor too cool-toned and delivers the perfect shadow to make my lips look twice as plumped. I often struggle to get lip liner right, but these lip shapers are genuinely foolproof. The domed nib ensures a soft blurred contour that is easily blended or wiped away in case of mishaps (honestly, the smudger tool is a game-changer) and the soft matte texture of the liner pairs well with just about anything.
Like Hailey’s combo, I used mine with the Rhode Pocket Blush (£24) in the shade Sprinkle in the centre of my lips, and I really like this duo together. I also find many lip liners dry out my lips, but not this one. In fact, it left my chronically dry lips feeling hydrated and soft, so I’ll be holding tight onto it during the cold weather too.”

Balance
Shade: Balance (caramel brown)
Annie’s Review: “I loved the colour of Balance, a warm caramel brown, but I’m just not sure it would last all day on my lips. Even using the smudger provided felt like I was significantly reducing the product pay-off. However, I think if you’re up for re-applying on the reg this would be a great product to go back to.”

Lean
Shade: Lean (warm medium brown)
Georgia’s Review: “I tested the shade Lean, which I’d describe as a brown-toned nude. I think it’s a pretty universal shade—it’s not too dark and there isn’t a pink undertone, and it would make a nice ‘your lips but better shade’ for someone with darker skin than mine.
I love how creamy the liner is, gliding on smoothly without any tugging on the lip, and it blends nicely too. Speaking of blending, the little silicone spatula-shaped tip on the other end is pretty innovative as lip liners go, helping to feather the product into the centre of the lip or soften it around the border for a blurred effect. I got a more precise finish than when I use my finger for the same effect.
I would say my lips look plumper, but no more so than when I slightly overline them with any other soft-textured liner and buff it out. I was away from home when I tested this and all I had to pair it with was Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (£19), which is clear and fairly glossy. I really like the shade of the liner, so I’d happily top it with this or a similar balm and let the colour soften on my lips, leaving the border defined and slightly smudged.”

Stretch
Shade: Stretch (neutral mocha brown)
Jerrylyn’s Review: “A brown liner topped with lip gloss is my go-to combo, so I couldn’t wait to try Rhode’s new Peptide Lip Shape in ‘Stretch’, a dark chocolatey hue. The creamy formula makes for smooth application, and while it took me a while to get the hang of using the smudger effectively, it did help to achieve an understated but contoured finish to my lips.
My lips felt moisturised, but I found myself needing to reapply throughout the day—worth keeping in mind for those who prefer more long-wearing liners. That said, this is the perfect on-the-go product (no sharpening needed!) and I’ll definitely be adding it to my roster of lip products.”

Flex
Shade: Flex (rich neutral brown)
Natalie’s Review: “I loved the creamy texture of this product on my lips. As someone with perpetually dry skin, I found that this glided on really easily, and blended just as well. I tried a rich chocolate brown shade called Flex that gave me the perfect ’90s-inspired bold lip liner look—just a little less harsh, thanks to the creamy formula that blends effortlessly.”

Spin
Shade: Spin (rich plum brown)
Brittany’s Review: “I tested the shade ‘Spin’ which is a deep, dark neutral brown. Dark brown lip liners are my go-to and I really loved how this shade looked on my skin tone. It wasn’t too red like some of the other brown lip-liners I’ve tried. I tested my lip liner with the Dior Lip Glow Oil (£33) in ‘Mahogany’. The smudger did a good job of blurring out the lip liner, not to mention it’s a great idea, but down to personal preference, I’m more likely to use my fingers to get that less-precise blurred effect that I like.
The liner is extremely creamy, gliding easily onto lips. However, I did find that it wears very easily, which might be frustrating if you’re someone who likes to do your makeup and go for the day. If you don’t mind re-applying occasionally I’d say this is a great neutral deep brown that you don’t usually find on the markets for deeper skin tones.”

Move
Shade: Move (deep cool brown)
Emily’s Review: “I chose Move, a darker shade than I would typically go for, which is a deep cool-toned brown. The lightweight feel and gentle glide-on application was a welcome sensation on the lips, as I was apprehensive the colour would be too harsh on my skin tone, but I loved the ’90s-inspired look. The smudger seemed a bit of a novelty at first, but saying that, I’m loving the blurred effect it helps to achieve. The punch of colour shows just how pigmented the liners are and combined with a complimentary lip combo, it’s a winner!”
