For those of us who live in colder climates, holiday party dressing can be quite the conundrum this time of year. You get all dressed up in a cocktail dress or a pretty skirt only for the outfit to shrouded underneath your biggest (and warmest) coat. It’s almost like the base outfit matters less than your outermost layer, especially if you find yourself hopping between several parties in one evening without ever shedding your coat. While classic wool coats and of-the-moment furry styles are still the go-to’s for winter, I’ve noticed that some of the most tasteful dressers in chic neighborhoods like New York’s Upper East Side and west London are styling a coat trend that’s much more evening-ready and elegant: a satin coat.

While satin outerwear isn’t necessarily a brand new trend having emerged in the fall/winter 2023 collections at Altuzarra and 16Arlington, designers have once again returned to the opulence and elegance of the satin evening coat for fall 2025. At Dries Van Noten, they arrived flowy and loose in rich jewel tones and at Toteme, collarless, tonal, and minimalist. Now that holiday party season has arrived, I’m already seeing a number celebrities and It girls tap into the elegant outerwear look, and they’re especially concentrated in certain neighborhoods like New York’s Upper East Side and London’s posh west side where good taste is abundant.
