Netflix’s upcoming action thriller is taking shape with a new lead actor. The A-lister has joined the cast after Alan Ritchson’s exit.

According to Page Six, Keanu Reeves is set to star in Netflix’s Maelstrom after Ritchson drops out. The reason behind the Reacher star’s departure remains unclear.

Producer Jeff Robinov sold Maelstrom as a spec script to Warner Bros. in 1993, when he was an agent. Netflix has now revived the film, marking the first project under its new deal with Robinov.

Jaume Collet-Serra is directing Maelstrom, while screenwriter Mark Bianculli is refining the screenplay from an original early draft by late writer Gregory Fitzpatrick.

What is the Netflix action movie Maelstrom about?

Maelstrom follows a Federal Marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer in witness protection as she prepares to testify against him. One evening, a hurricane cuts off their communication from the outside world and prevents reinforcements from reaching them. Left to their own devices, the pair must fend off the arms dealer’s men while navigating the ongoing natural disaster outside.

Besides Keanu Reeves, Netflix has not confirmed any additional cast members. Filming schedules and other production details also remain under wraps.

Reeves has established himself as a prominent action hero in Hollywood over his decades-long illustrious career. Some of his most popular action movies include the John Wick trilogy, The Matrix franchise, Speed, Point Break, Constantine, and more. He has also voiced Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in the 2022 animated superhero film DC League of Super-Pets.

Beyond Maelstrom, Reeves’ upcoming projects include the satirical black comedy film The Entertainment System Is Down. The actor will also return to voice Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
