New Jersey Senator Curtis Bashaw freezes during debate
In a surprising moment during the New Jersey Senate debate, Republican candidate Curtis Bashaw appeared to freeze mid-sentence. This was while he discussed affordability issues with his opponent, Democratic Representative Andy Kim. The debate is particularly significant, as both candidates are competing for the Senate seat vacated by Democrat Bob Menendez. The latter resigned earlier this year amid a political corruption scandal.
As Bashaw stopped speaking and seemed lost in thought, Kim quickly moved to check on him, demonstrating concern for his fellow candidate. The Republican candidate then reassured his opponent that he was okay, prompting him to return to his podium. However, the debate was paused for a commercial break to allow Bashaw to gather himself. During that time, he stepped off the stage for about ten minutes.
Upon his return, Bashaw explained the incident by saying, “I got so worked up about this affordability issue that I realized I hadn’t eaten so much food today.” He even expressed gratitude for the audience’s understanding. Following the debate, the Republican representative took to social media to clarify his well-being.
Bashaw wrote, “Thank you all for the well wishes! I was out campaigning all day, and I never stopped to get a bite to eat. Excited to eat pizza with my fantastic volunteers at the post-debate party tonight!” In a follow-up post, Bashaw confirmed that he had secured the pizza and expressed appreciation for his supporters.
Additionally, a spokesperson for Bashaw’s campaign reassured the public that he was fine. They explaining, “Curtis is fine! He was on the campaign trail all day and didn’t get a chance to eat. He stepped off-stage and had a protein bar and some Coke and came back to debate five minutes later. Even having not eaten all day, Curtis was still able to eat Andy Kim’s lunch tonight!” (via FOX News)
