Multidimensional Magic Unfolds in Exclusive Look at Interior Artwork from Archie Comics’ New One-Shot KARDAK THE MYSTIC
This summer, Archie Comics is continuing to reintroduce readers to memorable characters from their eclectic history with the new one-shot Kardak the Mystic, and ahead of its August 14th release, we have an exclusive look at unlettered black-and-white interior artwork from the multidimensional and magical issue!
Below, you can see John Cardy cross into another realm in our exclusive early look at Kardak the Mystic, and we also have insights from writer Joe Corallo and artist Butch Mapa!
Writer Joe Corallo: “I think, as of late, Archie has been doing a great job filling the void that’s been left in the absence of DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint in both their superhero and horror comics. With KARDAK, I really wanted to strike that balance of both the superhero and horror genres that so many of my favorite comics have over the years. If you like what Archie is doing in the realm of superhero comics, horror comics, or both, there’s something here for you to be excited about.”
Artist Butch Mapa: “With the release of DARKLING last November, Archie applied its successful horror approach to one of its classic superhero characters. KARDAK THE MYSTIC follows along the same path, featuring a character with an even longer history being given a supernatural twist. My approach is always to adapt my style as much as possible to suit the story. For KARDAK, Joe’s treatment was less of the gory body horror that I’d done in my previous work for Archie and had a more of an eerie tension that built up over the course of the script.”
KARDAK THE MYSTIC (ONE-SHOT)
All John Cardy ever wanted was to be recognized for his talents at magic tricks and sleight of hand. He’s talented, but not enough to get noticed for it until he comes across a (unbeknownst to him) cursed ruby. This ruby grants John the power of invisibility. As Kardak the Mystic, he performs feats no one else can with this magic. Unfortunately for him, going invisible isn’t just a trick of the eyes, but rather entering another realm parallel to our own. And something inside that realm wants to use Kardak to enter our world for dark purposes.
