In this episode we’re looking back at 2016’s Nerve!
Nerve is a contemporary thriller directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, and starring Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Emily Meade, and Juliette Lewis. After shy highschooler Vee (Roberts) is embarrassed by her best friend Sydney (Meade), of whom is a new internet sensation via an online reality dare-based game called Nerve, Vee decides it is time to shed her meek ways. She enters the game and soon finds a partner in the mysterious Ian (Franco). Vee rapidly becomes every bit a sensation as Sydney leading to building rivalries, steeper competition, and maybe even a little fun for Vee. Unfortunately, the dare-based game becomes more intense with each challenge, and Vee starts to question the sinister motives of those who created the game, as well as those that watch.
2016’s Nerve is for horror fans that enjoy contemporary technology fused with breathtaking suspense. Furthermore, the vibrant look of this film draws the viewer into a deceptive world amongst the familiarity of desktops and social media. Although audiences will need to suspend their disbelief for occasional moments regarding travel and instant fame, Nerve is worth the ride.
