Original Netflix Horror Series Is First to Slay ‘Suits’ in Streaming Wars

Since June, Aaron Korsh’s long-running legal drama Suits, co-starring current Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, has been dominating the Nielsen streaming charts. Since landing on Netflix in June, the series has accumulated a staggering 45.4 billion viewing minutes, which… media scholars will be studying for years to come, I guess.

Never mind that no one really cared as Suits dropped weekly on USA, the show about sexy attorneys practicing sexy law remains as bingeable as ever. Maybe not for long, however, given that for the first time since its streaming premiere, another Netflix series has beat out Suits for two consecutive weeks. That show? Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher. Never bet against the Flana-man.

Per Netflix: To secure their fortune – and future—two ruthless siblings build a family dynasty that begins to crumble when their heirs mysteriously die, one by one.

The reception to Flanagan’s latest Netflix shocker has been astoundingly positive, with some calling it the best work he’s ever done. Our own review was a little more muted, but we still had plenty of fun in the Poe meets Succession playground Flanagan cultivated. Nielsen numbers from the week of October 16 through October 22 highlight The Fall of the House of Usher’s meteoric rise on Netflix, showing a healthy nineteen percent increase in viewership minutes over the miniseries’ premiere week.

In its second consecutive week, the series logged 1.5 billion streaming minutes, a metric Nielsen defines as any household of 2+ people and the total minutes streamed on any program. The most recent week’s numbers have Netflix in eight of the ten top spots. Time-travel crime miniseries Bodies also demonstrated a healthy premiere, clocking 633 million viewing minutes during the same week.

What do you think? Where does The Fall of the House of Usher rank among Mike Flanagan’s work? What other series should I be binging into the wee hours of the night? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
