Video Interview: Steffen Haars, Sebastian Croft, and Maisie Ayres Discuss Blending Horror with Comedy in GET AWAY

A bloody, brilliant blast that’s easily one of my favorite films of the year, Get Away pays homage to folk horror while cleverly subverting the genre at the same time, all while delivering the gory goods every step of the way. Written by Nick Frost (who also stars in the film) and directed by Steffen Haars, Get Away follows a delightfully dysfunctional family on a vacation to an isolated Swedish island where the locals are preparing for an ancient festival and have their unsettling sights set on the island’s new tourists as the unwanted guests of honor.

With IFC Films and Shudder preparing to take viewers on one hell of a vacation when Get Away opens in theaters beginning December 6th, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with Steffen Haars and co-stars Sebastian Croft and Maisie Ayres about their new film, including balancing horror with comedy, embracing the movie’s intriguing twists, and bonding while filming in Finland.

Synopsis: The Smith family’s much-needed vacation to the remote Swedish island of Svalta takes a dark turn when they arrive during preparations for a mysterious local festival that celebrates a dark history. Unsettled by the unfriendly locals and strange rituals, they try to make the best of their trip, stubbornly enjoying the island’s isolation and natural beauty. However, as the festival looms closer, the family realizes something far more sinister is unfolding—especially when they discover that a serial killer is on the loose.
