Video Interview: THE HAUNTED SEASON Creator Kier-La Janisse Rekindles the Tradition of Conjuring Ghost Stories for the Holidays

Through her remarkable work as an author (House of Psychotic Women) and documentarian (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), Kier-La Janisse has consistently been one of the most vital voices in preserving and celebrating the history of horror, and now she’s helping to add new cinematic nightmares to the genre’s storied catalogue with The Haunted Season.

Rekindling the tradition of telling ghost stories around the fire in the cold winter nights of the holidays, The Haunted Season will feature a new episode each December on Shudder (in collaboration with Severin Films) in the coming years.

Written and directed by Sean Hogan, the first episode of The Haunted Season, “To Fire You Come At Last,” is now streaming on Shudder, and we caught up with showrunner and creator Kier-La Janisse to discuss the launch of the seasonal new series, including collaborating with Sean Hogan, continuing the history of holiday ghost stories, and what the festive future holds for The Haunted Season.

“From Severin Films and renowned author, producer, and filmmaker Kier-La Janisse comes The Haunted Season. Created by Janisse, one new episode of The Haunted Season will arrive on Shudder each December with chilling short form horror tales in the tradition of telling ghost stories for Christmas.”
