Non-Toxic Cookware — My Honest Thoughts

Non-Toxic Cookware — My Honest Thoughts

The number of non-toxic ceramic cookware brands on the market is high. With so many options to choose from, the decision has become difficult. I chose two of the hottest brands of PFAS-free ceramic cookware to test… and my findings might surprise you!

Let’s start with what PFAS are and why you should avoid them! PFAS are a group of widely used synthetic chemicals that can accumulate in our bodies over time. According to the EPA, PFAS can affect or cause development delays, infertility, increased risk of cancer, hormone disorders, and obesity. While we cannot completely avoid PFAS, making small changes in your home can reduce their effects on your family.

Teflon was previously used in nonstick cookware but was later found to have very high levels of PFAS. It was officially banned in the US in 2014. While Teflon is no longer used in cookware, this does not mean all PFAS are banned from cookware. It is still important to find cookware that is PFAS-free.

My testing process did not exist in a vacuum, but I tried to use pots and pans from both brands equally so they had similar wear and tear. There is no tangible way to determine a winner other than my personal preference and which brand I found myself organically reaching for more often.

GreenPan

GreenPan is the OG of clean cookware. They first introduced non-toxic cookware in 2007. I bought my first set about 10 years ago and still have it. Although they have made many changes, developed new technology, and introduced new lines, their passion for safe cookware remains the same. I purchased a new set of GP5 pans and a GP5 pot for this testing process and was VERY impressed with the upgrades.

The silhouette rivets are possibly my favorite feature of these pans. They make cleaning SO easy. If you’ve ever had egg stick on the little round bumps inside a pan, you can understand my excitement!

While I do not have an induction stove, GreenPan offers 3 lines that are induction-compatible! Nova, Valencia Pro, and GP5.

Depending on what line from GreenPan you choose, they tend to be a little more affordable than Caraway. They offer a broader range of pricing.

Caraway

Caraway has made a name for itself on Instagram. It seems all food or health influencers have Caraway pots and pans. I see Caraway EVERYWHERE! And why wouldn’t I? It is stunning!

Caraway has been on the clean cookware scene for about 6 years. I bought my first Caraway set a year ago and it has seen a lot of use. At first, I loved everything about my Caraway pans. They are heavy, sturdy, and silky smooth! Over time, I found the nonstick coating to become less… nonstick! I was having more trouble getting food and burn marks off of the bottom of the pan.

While I like the Caraway brand and enjoy cooking with it, GreenPan was still an overall winner for me!

Cookware Care

Taking care of your cookware will lengthen its lifespan, no matter what brand you choose!

  • Avoid using metal utensils when cooking to prevent scratching
  • Wait until pans are completely cooled before washing
  • Although dishwasher-safe, handwashing will prolong the life of ceramic cookware
  • Do not stack pans on top of each other without a barrier in between to prevent scratching — We use a paper towel or wash cloth in between pans!
  • If stubborn food is stuck on pans, simmer soapy water to break it up and scrub with a non-abrasive sponge
  • Make sure your pan is completely dry before adding it to heat
