Snail Mucin: Does it Really Work?

Snail Mucin: the hottest beauty product of the year. Yep, you read that right! Snail Mucin, also known as Snail Secretion Filtrate, is the Korean skincare product we didn’t know we needed in our lives. With its hydrating + anti-aging benefits, the viral sensation is taking over the internet [and our skincare routines]! Equal parts disgusted and intrigued, Team LIY decided to see for ourselves what all the snail slime excitement is about. We took matters into our own hands – and faces – to test out the famous hydrating serum, daily moisturizer, and peptide eye cream for several weeks on all different skin types. These are our results!

PS. According to the brand, NO Snails are Harmed: Snail Mucin is obtained in a safe and environmentally friendly way in a favorite environment of snails and then processed as a cosmetic material. The snails are placed over mesh in a dark and quiet room, where they are left to roam freely leaving mucin in their trails. No external pressure is applied to force mucin production. It is 100% Natural, Hypoallergenic, Dermatologist-tested, Not Tested on Animals. All products are Hypoallergenic, Dermatologist tested, Animal Testing-free , Parabens-free, Sulfates-free, and Phthalates-free. You can learn more about the brand here.

Introducing one of Amazon’s Best-Selling beauty products! With over 50,000+ reviews, we needed to see what all the excitement was about. This is a hydrating serum that soothes damaged skin, repairs dark spots, and improves skin vitality. It’s great for dehydrated, acne prone skin. And yes, it’s made with 96.3% snail secretion filtrate.

Steph – Dry Skin Type

First thought: Feels thick— but then it soaked in and was fine.

Smelled like: Nothing

Felt Like: A light gel

Used it: Every morning after toning.

Results: When I look at my before/after photos, I feel like my skin has a more even tone than it did before using the serum. My skin feels moisturized, however this isn’t the peak time of year for moisture issues. I do feel like my skin was a bit more shiny than normal – not greasy because my skin is pretty dry all the time, but shinier than I would like. I think I’m going to switch to using it before bed to see if that issue goes away.

Would you buy it again? Probably. I like the way my skin feels when using it. It’s not the most amazing mind blowing product, but it gets the job done and is a great price.

Other Thoughts:  If you use a full pump, it’s probably too much. Definitely don’t make the mistake of using two like I did! It’s easy to get too much, but once you’re used to how much to dispense, the product will last a loooooong time!

Ashley – Oil Prone Skin

First thought: This is different & kind of slimy…

Smelled like: It doesn’t have a smell!

Felt Like: Very slick.

Used it: Every night after toner, before night cream.

Results: I do think my skin is more awake, brighter. My boyfriend even commented that my skin looked great after my night routine. “Wow, you’re glowing!”

Would you buy it again? Yes!

Other Thoughts: I did try to use it in the morning before my moisturizer but felt that it gave me more of a shine throughout the day. Even with the heavier initial texture, it’s very light on your face & absorbs quickly. This has helped plump some fine lines but did not help with any breakouts.  I don’t think it made them any worse, it just did nothing to diminish them either.

Lauren – Normal Skin Type

First thought: There’s no way this is actually from a snail, ha!

Smelled like: No smell!

Felt Like:  Typical of my other facial serums!

Used it: Evenings before bed.

Results: I didn’t see a wow factor! I don’t feel that it performed any better or worse than other serums I’ve used- I honestly I felt like I noticed the biggest difference on hands if I rubbed it in there – which my hands are quite dry! So maybe it’s a better fit for someone with more dry skin!

Would you buy it again? Probably not.

If you’re feeling comfortable with the snail serum, let’s move on to the All In One Cream Daily Moisturizer. It has nearly 25K reviews on Amazon, and for good reason! It hydrates and repairs skin, and relieves redness. It, too, is made with snail secretion filtrate + hyaluronic acid making it extremely moisturizing for dry skin.

Claire – Sensitive, Combination Skin

First thought: This isn’t so bad! Looks wayyy more normal than I expected!

Smelled like: Nothing [thank goodness!]

Felt Like: Here’s where I got a little queasy. The moisturizer is a lot more stringy than the serum… like rubber cement glue or kid’s homemade slime.

Used it: Every morning before makeup as a moisturizer and on a clean face before bedtime!

Results: I was hesitant at first [can you blame me?!] but I LOVE this stuff. I haven’t noticed a huge change in my skin since I’ve started using it, but I love the way it makes my skin feel when it’s on. It’s very moisturizing and soaks in quickly. With sensitive skin, most beauty products make me break out, but I didn’t experience that at all with this product! I’ve been using it regularly for about a month now and have been getting a ton of compliments on my skin. My girlfriends keep asking me if I got botox – spoiler alert: I didn’t, it’s just the snail slime.

Would you buy it again? Maybe. My only complaint about this product is that it’s not a pump-style container. I’m always hesitant about sticking my fingers into beauty products as it can store/transfer bacteria. If I were to purchase again, I would get this more sanitary version!

Last, but certainly not least, is the Peptide Eye Cream. When it comes to aging skin, we’re down to try just about anything to slow it down! This eye cream helps to firm skin, boost radiance, and reduce dark circles for a more youthful eye area + prevent signs of aging.

Erin – Combination to Oily Skin

First thought: Oh wow, a decent amount comes out with one pump!

Smelled like: I was worried about this, but thankfully no smell at all!

Felt Like: To keep things PG, the thing that I will say it reminds me most of is Elmer’s Glue – you can use your imagination for other things a creamy, white substance may remind you of 😉

Used it: I would apply this every morning after all other skincare and before I applied my makeup!

Results: I was worried at first how quickly the eye cream would absorb into my skin, but after tapping it into my skin with my fingers after 10-15 seconds, it was absorbed and felt very hydrating around my eye area! Am I wrinkle free? No. But because there is added moisture, it does decrease the look of the lines which I’ll take! It does make my eyes appear a little brighter [sorry dark circles] which has been a great bonus! Overall, it simply feels good on my skin, is a great price point and would recommend to my friends!
Would you buy it again? Yes! I want to try the all over face serum now after seeing the results on others!
