The Best Bug Bite Prevention Tools

Buzz, buzz! Summertime is officially here, friends [cheers to that]! Unfortunately, as we all know, when the temps heat up, the bugs come out. 🩟 And as much as we hate pesky mosquito bites, we hate the smell of stinky bug spray even more. If you can relate, you’re in the right place! The LIY Team has rounded up our best bug bite prevention tools from repellant spray, kid-friendly stickers, to pouches to stash in your planters! Here’s to a bug-free summer!

Mosquito Repellent Pouches

Yesterday we went over to a friend’s house and as we were standing at the front door I noticed it smelled like a spa — when we went inside I told my girlfriend how good it smelled outside and she said “It’s the mosquito packets I have hiding in planters” đŸ€Ł Long story short, I hit checkout asap to hide these outside around our home – in planters, on top of light fixtures etc to keep the bugs away while creating a spa-like scent thanks to the natural oils!

Thermacell Patio Shield

The best $15 purchase you’ll make this summer! The temps are warmin’ up friends which can only mean one thing
. bugs! If you don’t have one of these Thermacell mosquito repellant tools, this is your reminder to order this before they get too bad! I love that it is scent-free and keeps mosquitos away within a 15-foot radius!

Thermacell Lantern

If you love the traditional Thermacell, but aren’t crazy about the look of it, allow me to introduce these Thermacell lanterns! I thought they’d be perfect to keep on our front and back porches for evenings out there! I love that they blend in with the decor while still doing the job at keeping the pesky mosquitos away!

Deet-Free Bug Repellant

I typically avoid using bug spray if I can, because I can’t stand the smell! When I came across this one made with clean ingredients and a citrus vanilla scent, I had to give it a try! While it doesn’t smell like perfume by any means, it does smell better than your traditional OFF spray, and I love that it’s a clean product. Also available in wipes, perfect for travel!

Powered by Essential Oils Mosquito Wipes

Jen here, we just got back from a week trip to two National Parks! Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.. and while it was still early June, the mosquitos were still out playing! These wipes came in handy as I easily packed them in our hiking bags and passed them out to the kids to wipe down before we headed out on the trail! I enjoyed the smell, as they have great essential oils in the wipes – so it really didn’t stink you up! While I did still manage to get some bites, I know for a fact if I didn’t wipe down I would be a major mess! The mosquitos love me 🙂 I’m overall happy with how these wipes travel and work! I would totally buy them again!

Buzz Patch Stickers

I had high hopes for these little patches, but so far I’m leaning towards they’re a miss. We’ve been fortunate to not have a lot of mosquitos around our house so far this year, but my son tried them the other day when some flies and other little pests were flying around him while in the yard and he didn’t feel like they helped at all. It’s possible they work for mosquitos better, but unfortunately they also didn’t seem to stick to his clothes (where they’re instructed to be placed) very well. I don’t think I’ll be suggesting them to friends, but I’ll give them another try next time we’re around mosquitos to see how they work!

Lemon Eucalyptus Spray

I’m always on the hunt for more natural products, especially for my kiddos, and that includes our bug spray! I was excited to give this lemon eucalyptus spray a try, and am excited to say it WORKED for keeping the mosquitos away! They were starting to buzz and bite until we put this on, and then the only thing we noticed swarming around were the annoying flies and gnats [so this does not prevent those]. One note: if you had a day in the sun it can tingle a bit! I had gotten some sun on my arm that day and about 5 minutes after I sprayed it on, it felt like I had icy hot on my arm!

Mosquito Repellent Incense Sticks

Not gonna lie I was a bit skeptical about these sticks at first but wow they really work! I will say the first time we tried them it was pretty windy so it took awhile to keep them lit and I also felt like the smoke was just blowing away. We gave them a try again when it wasn’t as windy and they worked wonderfully! We just stuck ours in the ground since I didn’t realize the stand was sold separately (lol) you can also place them in a pot of sand or moist dirt.

Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel

Allison here! The worst part about summer nights are the mosquitoes! I don’t love the feel or the smell of bug spray, so after a recommendation, I tried this oil. It’s AMAZING! Not only did it keep all the mosquitoes away, but it kept my skin oh so soft! I can’t recommend this product enough!

No-Bite-Me Repellant & After-Bite Cream

I love that this cream works to keep the bugs away AND soothes itch after getting bit! It’s all natural [made with essential oils] and a little bit goes a longgg way! Don’t panic; it is green-ish in the container, but loses it’s color as soon as you rub it in, similar to a lotion. Bonus points for being a small, family owned business, handmade in the USA!

The Bug Bite Thing

We recently shared this Bug Bite Thing on Facebook and the LIY Community RAVED about it! It’s less than $10 and works for all kinds of bites, stings, and even splinters! LIY approved – see what our followers are saying about it here!

Moskinto Patches

Introducing Moskinto Patches: made for after-bite itch relief! These Moskinto Patches instantly stop itching & swelling from mosquito bites, ticks, no-see-ums and more. Bonus: they’re kid-friendly and waterproof! A must-have for your first-aid kit or camping trip!
