“The bucolic setting of Overasselt, eastern Netherlands, was plunged into chaos on Tuesday morning after 32 hooded men, armed with pistols and machine guns, arrived in a convoy of unmarked vans.
Along a road next to a gated estate, the group piled out of their vehicles. Before Berry Leenders, a 51-year-old security guard, had time to react, he had been shot dead. He was guarding the home of Jan G Jr, a 28-year-old convicted drug dealer allegedly responsible for stealing an estimated £160m [$210 Million] worth of cocaine from a rival.”

“Elite officers from the Dienst Speciale Interventies, a tactical police unit reserved for terrorist attacks or handling large-scale public disruption, arrived shortly afterwards.
Officers fired several warning shots, scattering any remaining suspects, before cordoning off the estate and combing the site for evidence.
By Friday morning, the Netherlands National Police Corps had arrested a total of 34 men, and all but three had been charged with the murder or manslaughter, or both, of Mr Leenders.”

“There are 34 suspects, 32 of whom are still in custody. This concerns sixteen French, eleven Dutch, two Algerians, one Libyan, one Ukrainian and one Belgian.
The arraignment was already ‘a huge challenge’, said deputy chief public prosecutor Monique Vinkesteijn. The arraignments were done by five examining judges. ‘I have not experienced it myself before, so in that respect it is also a special achievement’. The suspects are detained in different locations. That is why part of the arraignments were done via a video link.
Just holding so many suspects requires the necessary organization. That says director Patrick Fluyt of police union ACP. He has been working for the police for 35 years, including as an assistant public prosecutor. In addition, he has also participated in interrogations himself and therefore has a good idea of how such an investigation works.
‘We have different cell blocks in different locations and different houses of detention’, he explains. Moreover, the suspects in this case are only allowed to have contact with their lawyer, as restrictions have been imposed on them.”
