The Families Stone is officially in production. Just about one year after Diane Keaton‘s death, her costars from The Family Stone are back at work on the highly-anticipated sequel film.
It’s been 21 years since The Family Stone was released and became a holiday classic. The film has become even more beloved in the years since, and on October 21, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, and Luke Wilson were all photographed reprising their characters in Brooklyn, New York. Maggie Siff, a newcomer to the cast, was also spotted on set.
In The Family Stone, Parker plays uptight businesswoman Meredith, who spends the holidays with boyfriend Everett Stone’s (Mulroney) family for the first time. Prior to the gathering, Meredith had only met Everett’s sister Amy (Rachel McAdams) and didn’t leave the best impression. Amid the disastrous weekend, Meredith’s sister Julie (Danes) comes in as a reinforcement, which only complicates things more as the family falls in love with her. In the end, Julie and Everett end up together, while Meredith falls in love with Wilson’s character, Ben.
Keaton played Everett’s mother, Sybil, in The Family Stone, and Meredith’s thoughtful gesture amid Sybil’s cancer diagnosis eventually bonded her to the rest of the family. In the one-year flash forward, Sybil has died, and The Families Stone will pick up 20 years later, with her widowed husband, Kelly (Craig T. Nelson), bringing the woman he’s fallen in love with to the family’s holiday gathering.
